CALEDONIAN MARTS

Caley Marts sold 118 cattle comprising of 63 bullocks, heifers and young bulls and 55 OTM cattle.

Prime bullocks averaged 226p per kg at 658kg and prime heifers averaged 234p per kg at 598kg.

All classes of prime cattle, young bulls and OTMS are required weekly. A smaller show was forward due to the adverse weather conditions, meaning numbers were short of buyers’ requiremen­ts.

Prime heifers sold to 268p pkg for a Limousin from W Dandie and Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn purchased by R Alexander, Butchers, Port Glasgow and to £1665 for a Limousin from J Mcalister, West Thomaston, Banknock purchased by HA Black and Sons, Butchers, Stirling.

Prime bullocks sold to 245p pkg for a Limousin again from Learielaw, purchased by T Johnston, Butchers, Falkirk and to £1632 for a Limousin again from West Thomaston purchased by Charles Kirkpatric­k, Lockerbie.

Bulls (under 30 months) sold to 210p pkg for a Limousin from W Dick, Mains of Throsk, Throsk and to £1696 for the same animal.

Also forward were 55 OTM cattle. OTMS averaged 148p pkg selling to 170p pkg for a Limousin from M Jack, Carriston, Star of Markinch and to £1450 for a Limousin from W Dick, Mains of Throsk, Throsk.

Dairy cows averaged 105p pkg selling to 122p pkg from J Logan and Son, Hillend, Alloa and to £880 from the same home.

Caley Marts sold 689 store hoggets and feeding ewes at their first store sheep sale of 2021.

All classes of hoggets made record averages and sold to a top of £107 for a pen of Texel hoggets from A and J Mcnicol, Pendreich, Bridge of Allan.

Caley Marts sold 1916 prime hoggs, ewes and tups at their weekly sale.

The overall average for the 1428 hoggs (with 45 per cent of the hoggs forward being Blackfaces) was 240p pkg with an SQQ average for 1214 of 241p pkg. The average for the remaining 55 per cent levelled out at a respectful 249p per kg.

A highlight of the sale was a Texel Hogg from FB Gauld, Standingfa­uld, Muthill kindly donated to the SINBA charity which provides help and support for families who have suffered the loss of a precious one. The hogg weighed in at 46kg and realised £138 and was purchased by W Shearer, Burnbrae.

Also forward were 488 cast ewes and rams. A good show of heavy ewes met an increased trade, hill and horned ewes were showing the effects of the recent inclement weather but would be similar on the week.

Heavy ewes averaged £109.51 selling to £147 for Beltex ewes from JAC Stewart, Kininmonth, Ceres. Export ewes averaged £69.53 selling to £100 for a pen of Cheviots from J Morris, Logie Farm, Newburgh. Cast rams averaged £93 selling to £144 for Beltex from JR Cheape and Co, Letham, Glenfarg.
