Complaint sparks probe into deputy leader’s behaviour

‘Matter resolved’after council holds investigation

- CHRIS MARZELLA

An investigation has been conducted following a complaint about the behaviour of Stirling Council’s deputy leader.

The Observer understands that solicitors were instructed by the council to conduct an inquiry into the conduct of Labour Councillor Danny Gibson.

Stirling Labour Group said that, following discussions with senior council officers, the issue was “resolved”.

When approached by the Observer for comment, Councillor Gibson said: “As a socialist and trade unionist I fully support – and would indeed encourage – any employee in any organisation to raise any issues with their line manager to have them resolved wherever possible.

“When raising often difficult and challenging matters on behalf of the people I represent I’m fully aware of the standards expected of elected members and do so in accordance with those requirements.

“An issue was raised concerning me and I engaged with the process and a resolution was reached. That’s how good employment practices should work, as was the case here.

“Our collective focus is on moving forward positively and constructively as the council delivers vital public services to the people of Stirling in these increasingly challenging times.”

In a statement by the Stirling Group of Labour councillors, they said: “As is right and proper, an issue was raised through normal channels and it was reviewed by both the Labour Group and senior council officers. All parties found the process helpful and the matter was resolved without need for further action. To comment further would be inappropriate.”

The Observer understands that the investigation process was completed in December, however the nature of the complaint remains unclear.

Stirling Council this week confirmed that one unnamed councillor was subject to an investigation.

A spokesperson said: “The council has been carrying out an investigation in relation to the behaviour of a councillor and we are unable to comment further at this time.”

Stirling North ward councillor, Mr Gibson, sits on numerous council committees – including environment and housing and planning. Additionally, Councillor Gibson also sits on the District of Stirling Licensing Board and serves as a director for Active Stirling.
