Rubbish piled up in street after bin delay

- CHRIS MARZELLA

Bags of rubbish piled up in a city street after residents were left without new wheelie bins for a forthnight.

People living in flats in Riverside’s Forth Street had been due to receive their new grey general waste bins – for non-recyclable rubbish.

The old bins were removed by council bin men, however, the new grey bins were not delivered.

As a result, they say they were forced to leave piles of bin bags on the kerbside on bin collection day last week, sparking fears that they could attract vermin.

One resident living there said: “I sent an email and had no response other than an automated one saying my complaint had been logged.

“My neighbours who also live in the close were on to Stirling Council and were told the bins would be replaced ASAP.

“We do not have a garden and our recycling bins are shared so we had nowhere to put our rubbish.

“Our flats are small and cramped as it is, so have struggled to put our rubbish out, leaving us with no choice to leave our bags outside at the bin bunker.”

Last Wednesday the grey and blue bins were scheduled for collection and a neighbour left all of the bin bags out in front of the property to be taken away. However, following the waste uplift, the bags remained.

The concerned resident added: “This leaves us with rubbish bags potentially attracting vermin and potentially spreading disease in a global pandemic.”

Council bin men returned later that day and removed the waste after residents explained the situation.

However, they were till left without a grey bin until Friday - a total of 14 days - and the council has now issued an apology over the blunder.

A Stirling Council spokesperson said: “We would like to apologise to this resident for the delay in the delivery of a replacement grey bin and any inconvenience this has caused.

“After being made aware of this issue, our waste teams looked into this and it was confirmed that a new grey bin was delivered to the address by contractors on Friday (January 22) and all the bags of rubbish had been removed from the street.

“So far, more than 60,000 grey and browns have been removed and replaced since midnovember 2020 as part of the council’s waste transformation programme.

“Due to the scale of the bin replacement scheme, there may be isolated incidents such as this, where a household is missed by our contractors during the rollout.

“Anyone who has had their old bin removed and not received a replacement within 48 hours can fill out a form on the Stirling Council website to alert our waste teams.”
