Roadwork headache forces BEAR rethink

Resurfacing hours change after noise complaints

- CHRIS MARZELLA

Roadworks being carried out on a main route through Callander left nearby residents with noise disturbances.

BEAR Scotland have been underetaking a programme of overnight works to resurface the A84 through the town on behalf of Transport Scotland.

However, those living in Main Street reported that noise disturbance was intensified by resonance.

Work on the £470,000 project has seen work carried out from Sunday, February 28, for a period of three weeks.

The first phase of work was to be carried out on the south end of the road between the hours of 7pm and 7am, from Sunday, February 28, to Monday, March 8.

That was to be followed by work on Main Street, between the hours of 7pm and 7am, from Tuesday, March 9, until Tuesday, March 16.

However, following the commencement of the second phase of the work, BEAR Scotland have been forced into a rethink this week after residents were impacted by the late night work.

A spokesperson for BEAR Scotland this week told the Observer: “Following feedback from local residents and noise assessments carried out recently we have made changes to the ongoing programme of surfacing improvements on the A84 through Callander.

“Due to the close proximity of buildings in Main Street, noise disturbance is being amplified by reverberation. To help reduce noise disturbance, we have arranged the works to now take place between 4pm and midnight each evening.

“To further mitigate noise disturbance caused by plant movements, white noise reversing indicators are fitted to onsite plant and we have planned the works such that the noisiest operations are completed by 11pm each night.

“For the remainder of the schemes, tipper lorries will only be brought to site when they are required and all other plant will be switched off when not in use.

“We advise that surfacing improvements have been postponed for the remainder of this week due to the adverse weather forecast. The project will resume on Sunday, March 14, at 4pm with all work due to be completed by Thursday, March 18, subject to weather conditions.”

The work to improve the carriageway there is part of a bid to make safe 1.2km of road.

A 10mph convoy system is in place during ther hours of work.

BEAR Sxcotland bosses last month said that the work would “greatly improving the quality and safety of these sections of the A84 for road users”.
