It’s back to track for town bike fans Big support for reinstating BMX facility in play park

- STUART MCFARLANE

Fresh plans to restore a Callander BMX track have been given the thumbsup by locals.

The town’s community council has taken on the idea after receiving requests from residents over reinstating the old BMX facility in the Camp Place playpark.

The first stage of the process saw an online survey published on social media and sent to Callander schools and the Youth Project in an effort to gauge the level of interest in the proposal.

And following the closing date of the survey last Friday, those in charge of the project have reported an “almost entirely favourable” message from more than 130 responses.

The results of the poll revealed that more than 95 per cent of residents approved the reinstatement of the track, with more than 80 per cent indicating they would use the park more if it returned.

In addition, more than 60 per cent of adults responding to the survey indicated they would volunteer to help maintain it in efforts to avoid it from falling into disrepair once again.

A Callander Community

Council representative involved in the project told the Observer the next stage of the process will include efforts to raise money for professional design advice, before the plans are then passed on to Stirling Council.

The spokeswoman said: “The project now has a small organising group of councillors and local volunteers and a business planning meeting was held with a couple of people with bike track expertise.

“They advised that the track will need a professional design suitable for current biking styles, safety and land drainage.

“This is the next step, as we need to have this design with all its relevant details to be available before we can approach Stirling Council to discuss any go-ahead for the track reinstatement, which may take longer than first thought as funds are likely to be required.

“But watch this space as the team are keen to develop the bike track into a usable fun space for our local children.

“This is an exciting developing story!”
