County’s fantastic five Scots set to star

-

Five Stirling County players have been named in the 31-strong squad for Scotland’s 2021 Women’s Six Nations campaign which kicks off tomorrow (Saturday) against England in Doncaster.

And two of them will be hoping they get the chance to take the field and win their first caps in the tournament.

Evie Gallagher and Evie Wills are the new faces in the squad and they will be joined by Megan Kennedy, Siobhan Cattigan and Stirling skipper Rachel Shankland, whose late try against France last year on her debut gave Scotland a thrilling 13-13 draw.

This year’s Six Nations will be played in a new and condensed format which will comprise of two pools of three teams with each team playing one home and one away fixture, culminating with a Super Saturday finals day. Scotland will join England and Italy in Pool A, with France, Ireland and Wales forming Pool B.

After facing England on Saturday, Scotand will meet Italy at Scotstoun Stadium on Saturday, April 17 at 5pm and on Super Saturday Finals Day on April 24, Scotland will host the side that finishes in the equivalent position in Pool B. Kick-off is again at 5pm

Former Stirling High pupil Gallagher has been in the Scotland Sevens squad while ex-Dollar Academy student Wills can play along the backline.

Gillian Duncan, who looks after women’s rugby at Stirling County, said: “We are absolutely thrilled that five County players have been called up to the international squad for the upcoming Womens Six Nations.

“We are especially excited to see Evie Wills and Evie Gallagher receiving a call up as they both look to gain their first Scotland cap.

“Both have showed talent from a young age and it’s been great to see them play through the age grades at Stirling before moving into the senior squad.

“We wish them the very best of luck for the coming weeks.”
