Weather Watch

-

After our hottest September temperature of 27.6 Centigrade on September 8, last week was more in line with that we can expect at this time of year with temperatures mostly in the teens, the odd spot of rainfall and light winds, writes Observer weather editor Scott Mclean.

We did reach 20.2 Centigrade last week but although we did see a few reasonable sunny spells, overall there was a lot of cloud around with some rainfall at times.

The lowest temperature was 8.1 Centigrade on Sunday, September 12. The maximum daily rainfall was 9.65mm on Tuesday, September 14, for a weekly total of 18.28mm.

Windspeeds reached 17mph on Monday,

September 13.

There will be some wet weather in the days ahead with showers and rain expected although there will be some sunny intervals at times but the wet weather will never be far away. Some heavy rain is possible later in the week. High temperatures will range from 12-15 Centigrade and could dip as low as 6 Centigrade overnight.

The wind will be breezy at times and is expected to increase on Thursday with gusts potentially reaching above 30mph.

Did You Know –Today (Wednesday) at 8.21pm it will be the Autumnal Equinox in Stirling, but it will not be until this Saturday when daylight starts to be shorter than night.

One of the reasons why daylight and night-time are not exactly equal on the day of the equinox is how sunrise and sunset is defined. If sunrise and sunset were defined as the moment the geometric center of the sun passes the horizon, then the day and night would be exactly 12 hours long on the Equinox. But that is not the case. Sunrise and sunset are defined as the exact moment the upper edge of the sun’s disk touches the eastern and the western horizon, respectively.
