All ages join to celebrate 20th World Squash Day

-

The 20th anniversary of World Squash Day was celebrated at Bridge of Allan Sports Club on Saturday with a funpacked afternoon of family squash.

World Squash Day was born in the USA to honour the memory of the considerable number of squash players who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks on New York on 9/11/2001.

Club president Stewart Penman was delighted with an event that brought players from all age groups and standards back on the court.

”Everyone thoroughly enjoyed taking part. Kids, mums, and dads all picked up their rackets for the first time, in some cases, in two years, as well as players who play week-in-week-out.

“I’d like to thank our head coach Jane Martin who did a fantastic job coordinating everyone, keeping us all motivated and getting the beginners hitting their first squash balls.

“World Squash Day gives us a great excuse to focus on squash at the club, encourage members and people from the wider community to come and give squash a try and feel the benefits of getting some fun exercise.”

Head coach Jane Martin felt the day was particularly enjoyed by some of the beginners who had their first experience of squash.

The former World No 8 said:“It was fantastic to see the squash courts buzzing with lots of youngsters, mums and dads all enjoying squash.

“It’s great fun getting on court with beginners and seeing their confidence and ability quickly grow after a few pointers and the huge smiles on their faces just told how much they enjoyed World Squash Day at BOASC.”
