Bulls raise a princely sum at auction

On Monday afternoon, six Beef Shorthorn bulls were sold to average £4,830 – up £420 on the year.

The top price of 7200gns was paid by J Innes and Sons, Dunscroft, Huntly for the reserve champion Dunsyre Phineas from the Leggat Farming Partnershi­p, Saddlebank, Logiealmon­d, Perth.

In the female ring, 46 Beef Shorthorn females went under the hammer to average £3261, selling to a top price of 11,000gns. The sale leader was Lowther Crocus from C Lowther, Askham who was sold to Welsh breeders Evans and Price, Llanilar, Aberystwyt­h.

Later, four Lincoln Red females sold to average £2887 and a Salers bull, Rednock Percy, from Stirlingsh­ire-based breeders G&M Pye, Rednock House, Port of Menteith sold to 3500gns. He was bought by JW Jamieson at Meikle Carleith, Galston, Ayrshire.

Stirling breeders achieved leading prices at the sale of Limousin bulls on Monday.

The sale peaked at 9000gns for the overall champion Maraiscote Regie from Wishaw breeder Ian Nimmo who went south with HB & LJ Lear, at Crewslow Manor, Whitchurch, Aylesbury. The second top price of 8500gns was achieved twice - Andrew Hyslop of Boquhan Home Farm, Kippen, selling Bangtidy Ralphlaure­n to W McLaren, Muirehouse­s, Kirriemuir, Angus and reserve intermedia­te champion Newhouse Rambo from RM Adam and Son, Newhouse of Glamis, Forfar, selling to T Howden, Stanley Farm, Perth.

Allanfauld Rockstar from the MacGregors at Allanfauld, Kilsyth made reserve overall champion in the pre-sale show on Sunday afternoon. He went under the hammer for 8000gns, bid by A Sharp and Sons, Farmton, Tough, Alford.

Also making 8000gns was Dyke Rembrandt from J MacGregor, Dyke Farm, Milton of Campsie, Glasgow. He was bought by Walter Dandie & Sons, Learielaw Farm, Broxburn, West Lothian.

Other leading prices for Stirling breeders include: 7000gn paid for the reserve senior champion bull Ronick Raymond, from R Dick, Mains of Throsk

Farm, Stirling, by WS Paterson, Golland, Kinross and 5000gns for Spittalton Rooster from J Burnett, Upper Spittalton Farm, Blair Drummond, sold to Forth Farming, Orchard Farm, Alloa.

In total 44 Limousin bulls sold, averaging £5,085, up £433 on the year with a clearance of 77 per cent.

The top price of 18,000gns for Simmental bulls sold on Tuesday was for Auchoracha­n Landmark 20 from D and R Durno and Sons at Auchoracha­n Glenlivet, Ballindoch and sold to B Grant, Druid Temple Farm, Inverness.

In all, 57 Simmental bulls sold to average £5961 - up £372 on the year. In the female ring, nine Simmentals sold to average £3033 with a top price of 6000gns while five cows and calves averaged £3423 and a top price of 4,200gns.

At the Charolais bull sale on Tuesday, 14 lots hit five-figure prices with a new breed average set for the Stirling Agricultur­al Centre.

Top of the lots at 28,000gns was Balthayock Ranger, the overall champion in the pre-sale show, from Major DFWH and NR Walter, The Garden House, Balthayock, Perth, sold to Welsh breeder Vince Corbett, The Gorther, Felindre, Knighton, Powys.

Next best at 26,000gns was for the reserve overall champion, Goldies Romeo from H Goldie, South Bowerhouse­s, Ruthwell, Dumfries, bought by Highfields Park Farm, Withyham, East Sussex.

Another two bulls from Major Walter’s stable included Balthayock Rampage sold at 25,000gns to J Price, Stauntonon-Wye while Balthayock Rambo was bought by KJ Thomas, Llechwedd, Capel Iwan, Newcastle Emlyn, Carmarther­n for 16,000gns.

A second bull was also bid at 16,000gns. This was Elrick Rabbi from MJ Massie, Mains of Elrick, Auchnaggat, Ellon and sold to T Smith and Son, Netherton Farm, Whitehouse, Alford.

The sum of 14,000gns was bid by C Jessop, Glebe Farm, Sinope for Glenericht Ricksen from WK and P Drysdale, Middle Drimmie, Blairgowri­e. The Drysdales also achieved 12,000gns for Glenericht

Ryder, selling to C&K Malone, Pitcairn Farm, Cardenden, Fife.

Elgin Royale went under the hammer for 11,000gns from Elgin-based breeder RA Milne at Kennies Hillock, Lhanbryde. Thereafter 10,000gns was bid for six bulls.

Meanwhile, Stirling breeders’ leading prices included: 9000gns for Allanfauld Rocknroll from A MacGregor, Allanfauld, Kilsyth selling to John P McBride, Ligford Road, Plumbridge, Omagh; 8200gns for Spittalton Roddy from J Burnett and Sons, sold to WSL Muir, Upper Onston, Stenness, Stromness, Orkney; 6000gns for Falleninch Rabby from Andrew Hornall, Falleninch Farm, selling to RG Farries and Co, Byrecroft Farm, Kirkgunzeo­n, Dumfries.

In all, 59 Charolais bulls sold to average £8,327 – up £1700 on the year.

The Stirling Bull Sales closed on Tuesday with a production sale from Stirlingsh­ire breeders Mr and Mrs JW Millar, Lochend Farm, Port of Menteith of all heifers born in 2019 and 2020 from their distinguis­hed Lochend Charolais herd. Sale averages: five in-calf heifers, averaged £7812, selling to a best price of 10,000gns while 11 maiden heifers sold to an average of £4639 and a top price of 12,000gns.

Leading the breed at 24,000gns was Blelack Prince Cartier sold to G Fraser, Newton of Idvies
