Community radio to re-launch in Stirling New dance station hopes to be Scotland’s greenest

- CHRIS MARZELLA

A community radio station that closed earlier this year is to be re-launched as a dance music station and is thought to be Scotland’s greenest station.

Stirling City Radio came off the airwaves back in October after a five year stint. The station was a volunteer-run community based outlet, broadcasting to the world online. It was supported and backed by charity Stirling Community Media which offered up the use of its studio, based in King Street.

Now, the owner of Stirling City Radio has confirmed its re-launch on Friday, December 3.

James Russell will introduce the station, a 24-hour dance broadcast, with a launch party at the Hemp Room Cafe in Upper Craigs.

James this week told the Observer: “It was after the overwhelming response on social media and the disappointment from all the presenters and listeners alike, on the decision made by Stirling Community Media to take Stirling City Radio off air and the recent COP26 climate summit in Glasgow where I was working as a technician that got me thinking about the station and the planet.”

He added: “The decision was to bring the station back on air and to focus on it as a dance station and to help with the carbon footprint, also with the input of all Stirling City Radio dance DJs a plan was kicked into gear. It’s a no brainer.”

James and his team of more than 20 DJs would have to travel in their vehicles to a studio using hours of electricity to keep mixing desks, PCs and all electrical devices running.

Previously, Stirling City Radio managed to stay on the air 24 hours a day during the pandemic with DJs doing their shows remotely from the own homes and studios. That’s set to continue to make the station “greener”.

James added: “Stirling City Radio now only partners with Net Zero companies that have a strategy to keep their carbon footprint down, such as Kualo web hosts that uses 100-per cent sourced green power so it’s a great start to net zero for the online station.

“The popularity of dance music shows by far this was the most popular with the listeners and on social media.

“Our main focus with our DJs will be to bring the party to you with live audio and video streams so it’s party time all weekend with guest DJs also dropping mixes such as the legendary Graham Park, Carl Cox and from NYC Lenny Fontana, Mindflash from Berlin and our own local talented pool of DJs doing their own shows.

“Sundays will be the ‘Big Chillout Day’ with our DJs playing blissful beats all day long and midweek has a sound track of Café Culture bar grooves and True House stories you can find ‘Dance Station Stirling City Radio’ on all social media outlets, SW and on our website, also your chance to win £100 worth of Stirling City Radio merchandise if you visit www.stirlingcityradio.co.uk.”
