Fight for the future

-

Dear Editor

Do we care about future generations?

Are our children and grandchildren important to us?

The recent COP 26 conference made very little, if any, headway in tackling climate change and keeping global warming below a 1.5 degree Celsius rise.

Keeping below this temperature rise is of paramount importance if our children and grandchildren are to have any chance of a half decent life.

One of the keys to achieving this below 1.5 degree target is urgently cutting back and eliminating our dependency on fossil fuels.

Falkirk Council Pension Fund, of which Stirling Council is a member, has recently submitted a report to Falkirk Council about their policy of divesting from fossil fuels.

As far as I can determine this report has yet to be received by Stirling Council let alone discussed by them.

This report makes for sad reading and has no real ambition. I

t advocates a more of the same policy.

The Falkirk Council Pension Fund has in the region of £120 million invested directly or indirectly in fossil fuels.

If this investment was sold and then reinvested in fossil fuel free investments, renewable energy, firms investing in make homes more fuel efficient and public transport not dependent on fossil fuels it would make a real difference to our children and grandchildren’s lives.

I hope that this report is seen soon by Stirling Council and they make known their response to it public and that they put the wellbeing of future generations as their highest priority.

The urgency of this matter can be seen in the comment made by Frans Timmerman, European Commission vice-president towards the end of COP 26.“I fear that my one year old grandson will have to fight other human beings for food and water.”
