Bridge of Allan thirds muscle in to top squash league

-

Bridge of Allan Sports Club third team have stormed to the top of the East of Scotland second division as they continue to exceed all expectations for their first ever second tier campaign.

Thirds number one Jamie Campbell claimed the decisive victory with a 3-1 success at the top of the order to help post a 3-2 triumph over ESC that has taken the Minewood men, sponsored by the Birds & Bees, four points clear at the top.

While following his recovery from Covid, Gordon Marshall produced a monumental effort at number three before losing a fifth game tie-break 17-15 at number three in the match of the night.

Ahead of this evening’s trip to Watsonians, skipper Bert Mitchell is determined to keep his side’s winning run going. He said: “When we started the season our sole aim was to stay up and blood as many juniors as possible at this level but it has been a real squad effort and we have exceeded these ambitions now.

“That is in no small part to the form of Jamie Campbell at number one. ‘Muscles’ as we like to call the big man, is now becoming one of the most feared top of the orders to play in division two such has been his improvement on the backhand side in terms of his line and length and his exceptional fitness and mobility.

“Watsonians are bottom and we must take advantage of that and hopefully we can remain top with just two matches left of the first-half.”

Elsewhere the BofA seconds moved fifth with a fine win at ESC 5. Captain Martin Jack said: “It was a hard-fought victory all the way down the order with a couple of five game matches going our way that swayed the balance.

“The big plus for us was getting Chris Turlik back from injury and if we can keep him fit, I don’t see any reason we can’t get back into the promotion fringes. But we have Edinburgh Uni firsts at Minewood tonight and that will be a real tester of these hopes.”

Meanwhile the BofA firsts sustained a 3-2 defeat at the hands of ESC 2 and with tonight’s trip to Heriot Watt University, captain Robin Bairner is anticipating a stern test against the defending champions who are three points clear of his side in third place.

Bairner said: “This will be another tough one but after a disappointing loss last week it’s vital we provide a response as everything is very tight at the top.”

Elsewhere the BofA Ladies side will continue their unbeaten defence of the East division one ladies’ title with a home game against ESC1. Captain Sheena Logan said: “We have a strong side out with Sabine Mackenzie back in the side and we are very much looking forward to this one against one of our main rivals.”
