Ladies last game loss

- RJ MITCHELL

Bridge of Allan Sports Club ladies team’s season came to an anti-climatical end when the Minewood girls slumped to only their second defeat of the campaign in their final fixture against Edinburgh University.

The Birds and The Beessponsored side had already successfully defended their East of Scotland Division One title when they beat Edinburgh Sports Club in the capital to put them out of reach of the students.

However hopes of ending the season on a high came to an abrupt 4-0 end as the students prevailed to gain revenge for a 3-1 defeat in the first-half of the campaign.

Despite the defeat captain Sheena Logan was satisfied with a successful defence of her side’s title.

“It is always the case with the students that it is hard to predict exactly what side they will send out in terms of strength and they fielded their strongest side while we were hit with a late call of due to a domestic issue and that tipped the balance.”

Indeed the encounter hinged on two titanic encounters at No.1 and No.3 respectively, where top of the order Sabine Mackenzie was edged 3-1 by Siobhan Wilkins in a match that went all the way to a 15-13 fifth game victory for the student.

No 3 Cat Smith, who will represent Scotland at the over-35 internationals this month, looked to have turned the tide by winning a third game tie-break 16-14 only to be pipped in the fourth 15-10 by Katie Gregson-mcleod.

Skipper Logan added:“if these two matches had gone the other way then who knows but in any case we end the season with one win each against Edinburgh University and more importantly we finish six points clear at the top of the table and that is what really matters.

“It would have been nice to finish with a final victory but it has just been that type of season where you never know what is around the corner. So, credit to every one of our girls for their dedication and determination, to make it two titles in a row is something that we can all rightly be proud of.

“It’s also nice that the women’s side were the only one to win silverware at the club this season!”
