Proposed seating and food for visitors

A Callander businessman is hoping to turn a derelict site in the town into an outside seating area and takeaway.

Tom Lewis of Mhor Bread has submitted an application to Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park for a change of use of the vacant site and bin store area at 8 Main Street to a hot food and drink servery.

Agents for Mr Lewis said the plan was to serve visitors to the main Callander Meadows visitor car park with both the products made in Mhor Bread and a variety of other catering offers.

In documents submitted with the application they added: “The areas immediately to the south of this proposal will be significantly altering due to flood prevention works being undertaken by Stirling Council so this proposed change of use is only for 24 months use until the flood prevention works commence.

“The land is scrub grassland, some semi-mature trees and the main bin store area for Mhor Bread. It is currently derelict land and has little or no visual amenity. It is located within the Callander conservation area and is highly prominent from the main visitor car park.

“It is proposed to move the bin store area into a sealed 10ft shipping container to the immediate rear of Mhor Bread to ensure no disturbance to the new seating and food sales area and to generally tidy up a currently unsightly feature. This feature will be relocated/ reviewed once the operation and extent of the new flood prevention works become fixed. All trees on the site are to be retained, scrub grass and litter cleared and a surface of rolled whindust laid. Remaining grassed areas will be mown and over seeded.

“An area of nonfixed seating will be installed on the riverside of the plot and a serviced area prepared for a food trailer/truck to the north of the site.

“The intent is to allow different vendors connected to the main parent business (Mhor) to place a trailer/van in the designated area to allow the food offer to rotate - from coffee and cakes to seasonal cooking. This may entail an occasional change of vehicle as the offer changes. There will also be sandwich board style temporary signage (within the site) and no fixed or illuminated signage.

“There will be a temporary storage container at the northern side of the site for secure furniture storage for the tables and chairs and LPG gas bottles, electrical hook-ups etc.”

Park planners are expected to make a recommendation on the application in due course.
