CONCERT

The next concert in St Mary’s Church will be at 3pm on Sunday, May 15, given by Sirocco Winds - Matthew Howells (flute), Sergio Vega Dominguez (oboe), Matthew Jansen Giraldo (clarinet), Robert Newth (French horn_ and Victoria Lopez (bassoon). As well as well-known pieces by Malcolm Arnold, Elgar and Holst, they will be playing amusing pieces by Danzi, Paquito D’rivera and Paul Patterson. As always, entrance is by voluntary donation, and the concert will last an hour followed by tea. Tickets may be booked in advance via aberfoylec­oncerts@gmail. com. There will also be a concert in June given by Ursula Smith, Professor of Cello and Senior Tutor in Chamber Musicat London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She will be playing music by Bach, Beamish, Sibelius and Britten.

BOWLING CLUB

Following a successful and well attended opening on Sunday, April 24, the club is back in full swing after the Covid interrupti­ons. The annual Ladies Day competitio­n, sponsored by Stewart Mcdonald Plant Ltd, was held on Sunday, well attended by clubs from around the district. On this occasion two Aberfoyle members won the competitio­n in a very competitiv­e final, winning on the last bowl. The winners were Gina Howieson and Leslie Bond. Club members meet regularly during the season for games, however regular Monday evening events are best attended and anyone interested in trying the game should come along to the club at around 6.30pm. All welcome.

BOWLING CLUB

Following on from the club winning a league match at Blackford last Saturday, it was the turn of the pairs and triples teams taking part in the Scottish National Regional competitio­ns. The triples team were edged out in an extra end shootout following a closely fought match, while the pairs team won their first round tie, but succumbed in the next round. Thank you to Doune Castle and Menstrie for hosting the matches. Good luck to our conquerors, Tillicoult­ry and Bridge of Allan as they progress in the competitio­n. The club’s senior fours enter the national competitio­n on Tuesday and wish them luck in their match at Riverside against Tillicoult­ry. The first home West Perthshire League match of the sxeason is at 2pm tomorrow (Saturday) against neighbours Doune Castle, in what is always a keenly contested match. The club’s competitio­n draws have been made, and the draw sheets are on the notice board for members to organize their matches. Good luck everyone. The club would like to thank Ross Anderson, of Andrew Anderson and Sons, Funeral Directors, for donating new mats, score cards and competitio­n draw sheets, just in time for the first competitiv­e match on home soil.

The special gift offering at Easter was on behalf of Christian Aid’s Ukraine Appeal and this will be followed up on Saturday, May 21 with a community lunch, open to everyone from noon till 2pm in the church annexe. KIPPEN CHRISTIAN AID

Homes in the village will be visited next week by collectors for Christian Aid. The value of your donation can be increased by 25 per cent if you are a tax payer by completing and inserting the Gift Aid slip inside the envelope. Drought is a serious problem in many countries. This is one area where Christian Aid gives support by providing assistance to access water or advice on drought resistant crops.

CHURCH

Rev Ellen Larson Davidson will lead a Christian Aid themed service in Kippen Church on Sunday, May 15 at 11.15am. All welcome. However, if you feel unwell please look after yourself and stay at home. THORNHILL NORRIESTON CHURCH

The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be celebrated On Sunday. The minister, Rev Ellen Larson Davidson, will lead the service which will start at 10am and will also be available on Zoom. Those who will be joining in on Zoom should make sure that they have their own elements ready. Please continue to be mindful of those who are particular­ly vulnerable in the community or who are anxious and would ask that people wear face coverings when entering and moving about in the church and remain vigilant about all matters of health to keep everyone as safe as possible. Sunday, May 15 is also Christian Aid Sunday and the start of Christian Aid Week and the minister will include Christian Aid material in her service. During the Week members of the congregati­on will deliver donation envelopes to homes in the village and surroundin­g parish. It is more than ever necessary that we do what we can to alleviate poverty and distress in so many parts of the world.
