SWANSWATER

The weather this week was mainly overcast with some cool days and, if the sun did make an appearance, some warmer spells.

The water temperature rose by a couple of degrees to 12oc and water clarity remains excellent.

Fish were fairly active and could be seen moving around the pond. In general they were in the top two to three feet of the water but went deeper when it was windier or bright sun.

Some cracking Rainbows in the 5lb to 7lb range were landed on both fly and bait with plenty of Golds and Blues also featuring in the catch returns as well as the odd Brown and Tiger. All the fish are in excellent condition and anglers are really appreciating the tussle they give.

As usual, a wide variety of flies, from lures to dries, were catching fish with the most popular patterns being Cut-throat

Cat, Egg, Orange FAB, Dancer, Cormorant, Buzzer, Kate Mclaren and CDC. On the bait pond, where the biggest fish of the week, a 7lb 8oz Rainbow, was taken, power bait, spinners, and worms were all doing well.

The fishery is open from 8am to 90pm every day except Thursday when it closes at 2.30pm.

A selection of the best bags taken on the fly included Calum Mcmillan three for 12lb including 7lb Rainbow; Stuart Alexander two for 8lb 8oz including 6lb 8oz Rainbow; Paul Mcglynn five for 16lb 8oz including 5lb 8oz Rainbow; George Johnston four for 13lb 8oz including a Gold plus two catch and release (C&R); George Gallacher four for 11lb; Peter O’brien four for 10lb 4oz including a Gold; Kevin O’brien four for 9lb 4oz including a Gold and a Tiger; Willie Macfadyen three for 9lb 12oz including a Gold plus one C&R; Daniel Shelton three for 11lb 4oz including a Gold plus two C&R; Calen Mclachlan three for 10lb; Heather Johnston three for 9lb 12oz including a Gold and a Blue; Dylan Sheridan three for 9lb 4oz including 3lb 12oz Brown and two Golds; Alistair Aitken three for 9lb 4oz including two Golds; Russell Lloyd three for 9lb; George Dobbie three for 7lb 8oz including a Gold;

LAKE OF MENTEITH

Buzzer fishing at the weekend was still exceptional but this week has turned a bit seasonal with a lot of rain and wind - not ideal for buzzers or dries.

There was a booking mix up at the weekend - hopefully not to be repeated. All anglers should make sure they have an email booking reservation from bookingonline@menteith-fisheries. co.uk.

The Fario 2022 Boat League started on Wednesday with new rules limiting fly size and standing (similar to the Scottish Clubs). All last year’s members have been emailed a reminder. It is expected that the new rules will tempt some seasoned individuals to return. New members always welcome.

Remember evenings now start at 5.30pm, including the Scottish Club Championships.

Tomorrow (Saturday) the first heat of the Scottish Club Championships will be held and the following trios representing their clubs are making an appearance Ardrossan Eglinton AC “A”, Black Bull FFC “B”, Dalry Garnock AC “A”, East Kilbride AC “B”, Gartmore AC “B”, Grimm Anglers “A”, Scottish Police Recreational Association (SPTA) FFS East AC “A”,SPRA FFS West AC “A” and Tartan Tyers FF.
