Dunblane’s Newton Primary School is receiving a welcome boost thanks to a wheely great fundraiser.

Dunblane residents Nick and Fiona Grant raised an amazing £401 in aid of the school after hosting the start of a hot rod car run – which went on to cover a further further 120 miles on Saturday.

All over the UK the members of the National Street Rod Association, which is celebrating its 50th year anniversary, are carrying out Spring Rumbles which gathers groups of people who have the same passion for pre-1972 custom cars and hot rods to head out and have fun during every weekend in May.

Nick Grant, who is avid member of the NSRA, put his hand up and said ‘let’s start the run from my house’.

Nick has a large garden – and also laid on free bacon and sausage rolls with copious amounts of fresh tea and coffee in exchange for a small donation.

The donations will be heading the way of Newton Primary School, which his son attends and is close to the family’s heart.

Family and friends took turns making fresh tea and coffee and two main chefs were busy in Nick’s custom-made barbecue house.

Newton Crescent was filled with around 30 hot rods with many residents, including Fiona, making themselves available to ensure the cars were parked safely and ensuring normal car flow could not be interrupted.

Spokesperson Colin Millar said: “Nearly all the street’s residents were out in force, however, enjoying the many different cars on display. Many photos were taken and lots of questions asked to the enthusiastic owners of the vehicles.

“The group, as planned, left in convoy quietly rumbling away from Newton Crescent at 11am and out through Dunblane.

“What a sight to see. Some of the nicest hot rods in the UK attended this run.

“A big shout out from everyone in the group to Nick and Fiona and the residents of Newton Crescent and Dunblane for making all the group welcome.

“The group proceeded out through Crieff and on through the Sma Glen to Aberfeldy for some fuel and a refreshment break at the Highland Safari Centre, then pushed on up to Tummel Bridge and along the beautiful shores of Loch Tummel onto Killiecrankie Bridge then on through Blair Atholl and down past Struan and Calvine, arriving back to Tummel Bridge with another chance to stretch the legs at the famous yew tree and onto the final destination at Killin.

“Most of the group stayed in the Killin Hotel before departing on Sunday morning to various locations throughout Scotland as well as three cars from England.

“A great time was had by all.”
