Plan for student homes in city

-

New student accommodation could be built on a city centre site.

Crawford Holdings Ltd have submitted an application to Stirling Council planners for a change of use from storage to student accommodation and the formation of a new student accommodation block on land behind 21 Dumbarton Road East.

In documents submitted with the application, agents for the applicant said the existing building was used as part of a restaurant on Dumbarton Road but has since been separated, while the remainder of the site is unused land and currently fenced off.

The proposals involve the existing building undergoing internal layout changes to accommodate two student flats with eight (five and three) single occupancy bedrooms.

The proposed new build would also accommodate the two student flats with eight (five and three) single occupancy bedrooms.

The site is currently accessed from a dead end at Crosbie’s Court and proposed vehicle access to the site (for maintenance only) would be via a dropped kerb at the end of that road. Pedestrian access would be via a new 1.2m wide footpath to the east and north of Crosbies Court.

“Due to the city centre location, the development does not make allowances for on site parking,” said the agents. “This is allowable in the planning guidance.

“The city centre location and proximity to Stirling University makes the location very desirable for student accommodation.

“All buildings accessed from Crosbies Court are residential in nature and therefore the proposed use would not vary significantly from the uses of the surrounding buildings, nor would it create much additional vehicular traffic on Crosbies Court.

“Overall, the construction styles and materials used in the immediate vicinity of the site show much variance.” Council planners will make a recommendation in due course.
