Re-appeal for community council nominations

-

Only 22 of Stirling district’s 42 community councils have formed following a recent election process.

The deadline for the submission of election nominations had been April 19.

However, there was a low uptake and Stirling Council has now set a new deadline for the submission of nomination papers as this Wednesday June 7 at 4pm.

Stirling MP Alyn Smith urge d Stirling residents to reconsider putting themselves forward.

He said:“community councils channel the voice of a neighbourhood, town or village, and are absolutely essential for local representation and democracy.

“I really would urge local residents to consider standing for office. Your talents, skills and expertise when it comes to what’s best for your local area are vital. Community councils also play an important statutory role in terms of applying for funding and having input on planning and licensing decisions.

“For so many of Stirling’s communities to be left without representation at the most local sphere is deeply concerning for the health of our local democracies.

“I’d encourage anyone interesting in getting involved in their community to visit the Stirling Council website to find out more, or contact: ccelections@ stirling.gov.uk.”

Residents from 16 upwards, who live within the community they wish to represent, and are registered on the electoral roll, can stand for election.

The outstanding 20 areas are: Port of Menteith; Bannockburn; Balquhidder, Lochearnhead and Strathyre; Bridge of Allan; Buchanan; Cambusbarron; Cambuskenneth; Carron Valley & District; Drymen; Hillpark & Milton; Kilmadock; Kippen; Logie; Mercat Cross & City Centre; Polmaise; Raploch; Strathard; Strathfillan; Thornhill & Blair Drummond;trossachs.
