On your marks for Killearn’s 10k race

- CHRIS MARZELLA

Killearn is gearing up for its popular 10k race when hundreds of runners descend on the village this weekend.

The 2023 edition of the Killearn 10k will take place on Saturday, June 3, starting at 11am in Killearn Park.

Organisers are looking forward to welcoming a full field of 250 runners after the event sold out in just over 24 hours when places went on sale at the beginning of December last year.

It was by far the fastest sellout in the race’s history, and everyone involved was bowled over by the level of support from local runners and the wider trailrunning community.

The Killearn 10k has one of the most naturally beautiful courses in Scotland – with Glengoyne and the Campsie Fells providing a dramatic backdrop.

Competition will be fierce at the elite end of the race. Hard work and good organisation year-on-year has earned the Killearn 10k a good reputation and the race team are proud to attract excellent fields in all main categories.

They are even more proud of their reputation for inclusivity, and for offering a warm welcome to runners of different ages and abilities. Everyone on the starting line on Saturday will be aiming to achieve goals of their own, be it a class win, a personal best, beating their husband, wife, partner or pal or completing their first 10k.

Cheering them on will be a team of marshals who make the event happen every year. And there would be no Killearn 10k without its fantastic team of sponsors: main sponsors West Homes, The Old Mill Killearn, Arnold Clark, A Total Clean, Cameron House on Loch Lomond, Killearn Pharmacy and S. Mac Joinery Solutions. The organisers would like to gratefully thank them all.

Before the 10k runners hit the trail, the Killearn Mile fun run in and around the park, staged in association with Active Stirling, will put smiles on the faces of participants and spectators alike. It’s beloved by local kids but is open to all runners, joggers and walkers, and organisers are proud to do their bit to spread the message that physical activity makes life better for everyone.

Other local sports clubs will have a presence in the park, so there will be plenty to see and do. A live compere will add to the excitement as the runners come back in and finish, and at time of writing the weather forecast is great.

A Killearn 10k spokesperson said: “It’s a great thrill every year to see the park fill up for the race.

“We always love to see the runners and the fun everyone is having. And we’ve been lucky with the weather for the last few years, so fingers crossed.”
