Society is again offering £10k pot

-

VERNON Building Society’s £10,000 Jubilee Fund is now open for applications.

The local building society will be again awarding funding to 20 good causes in the Stockport area with readers of the Express voting on how the money is shared.

This year’s programme will mean that since its launch in 2012 the Jubilee Fund will have awarded over £50,000 to more than 70 local charity and community groups.

One of the causes that benefited last year was Allotments Love Life, a community group that wants to help people with physical and mental challenges to enjoy the benefits of gardening.

The group collected 375 votes and were consequently awarded over £970 in Vernon funding.

Maureen Longden, chair of Allotments Love Life, said “The Vernon Building Society Jubilee fund enabled Allotments Love Life to provide wheelchair accessible raised beds on their community garden. Without the help provided by the Jubilee fund this would not have been possible.”

The group’s community garden at Flowery Field Allotments, Woodsmoor, was officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Stockport on June 4 and features some raised 27-inch-high beds which are suitable for wheelchair gardeners or for those with limited mobility who may find kneeling difficult.

If you’re involved in a charity or community group which is based in Stockport or benefits those in the area then you can apply for the Jubilee Fund at thevernon.co.uk/apply.

The closing date for applications is Monday, June 27.

A panel of judges will shortlist the applications, with the 20 groups chosen entering into a public vote using tokens in the Stockport Express to determine how much funding each group will receive.

Funding is allocated to groups according to the proportion of votes they have received of the total cast.
