ALL new psychoactive substances are now illegal to be sold or produced in the UK.
Formally known as legal highs, these drugs have been causing havoc in Stockport for many months, putting a strain on our local services and damaging the health of people who have been using them.
The banning of these drugs is welcome news and a step in the right direction.
However these drugs are going nowhere fast and they will continue to cause havoc to the lives of homeless and disadvantaged people.
These drugs will now be put in to the hands of drug dealers and will be sold illegally underground.

Why confuse people with terms like psychoactive substances? Let’s be clear, these substances are dangerous drugs. All drugs should be treated the same with the same acts governing their use, distribution and production.
Drugs are going to evolve over time, they always have. These new drugs simply replicate the effects of traditional drugs.
The chemicals involved in making them are synthetic, they are not natural substances as is the case with many class A, B and C drugs available.
Nobody knows what the long-term effects of using these synthetic substances are. As these drugs evolve and people begin to enhance their experimentation with them the risks and damage to people’s lives will increase.
These drugs were banned in both Ireland and Poland in 2011, however use of these drugs in both these countries has continued to rise. Taking drugs off our streets and harm reduction must be a priority for our local services.
