●●DAVE Stearn Presenter of Pure Breakfast tells us about his love of vinyl

It seems like everyone is falling back in love with ‘old school’ vinyl records. Personally my turntable gave up the ghost about 20 years ago and without a working record player, I converted to CDs and more recently, very reluctantly, to downloads but I never lost my love of vinyl albums.

I remember listening with horror to a friend telling me a few years ago that he had taken his entire record collection to the council tip for landfill ‘because no-one wants them any more.’

Fortunately I didn’t get rid of mine. I kept my collection of several hundred albums and a filing cabinet full of singles gathering dust and I now have a turntable again.

There is a certain teenage joy in the ritual of taking the LP out of its sleeve, lovingly cleaning it, then as you listen, read every word on a gatefold sleeve, especially one with all the lyrics on the inside dustwrapper. My day job is presenting the Breakfast show on Pure107.8FM but my ‘hobby’ is The Album Club on Sunday afternoon. It’s a great excuse to play some of the best music ever recorded, unfortunately sleeve notes not included.

I need Stockport to help me with my quest to find the best albums ever. Each week I pose the following dilemma; if the men in dark coats turned up at your door one night to take away all your music, except for three albums which would be the only music for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

It’s a difficult one. I will try to do it myself eventually. My current essential list stands at 20 to 30 albums. So if you get chance, have a rummage through your downloads, CDs or for extra Album Club ‘Brownie points’ gatefold vinyl and come up with your must have three albums, email dave@ pureradio.org.uk and one Sunday I could play your ‘Last Three Albums on Earth.’ »●Dave Stearn presents the Album Club Sundays on Pure107.8FM from 2-6pm.
