Disley developing next generation

DISLEY Golf Club have always had a great reputation for developing junior golf and have seen immediate success with two new initiative­s.

They hosted a first Inter Schools competitio­n with junior golfers from Stockport - Marple Hall High, St James High School, Stockport Grammar School, Hulme Hall High School, Hazel Grove High School and Priestnall School all taking part fielding teams of four players with the best two scores counting and the prizes sponsored by Crome Motor Group.

It was a closely fought competitio­n played in extremely difficult conditions and the winners with 67 points were Marple Hall School with 67 points, one more than Hazel Grove High School.

Disley junior organiser Joyce Commins said: “This was a great success and will now be an annual event and it is hoped to extend the competitio­n to include schools from East Cheshire.

“In addition this year we have launched a new junior academy with a very attractive joing fee especially for members’ children and grandchild­ren.

“Coaching is taking place on a weekly basis with our two profession­als Scott Jackson and Ian Ridgway.

“Our associate profession­al David Myers is running coaching sessions at the local schools and also brings the schools to Disley Golf Club for coaching.”

The Captain’s Evening Stableford at Disley saw Ed Rowbotham first past the post with 41 points, two more than Chris Parker, Colin Nesbitt, Will Henderson and Gary Gaskell.

A midweek medal at Disley produced some good scores led in by Dave Codd with 67 from Wayne Lindsay 68 and David Ward and Bob Worsley, both 69.

A medal for Disley ladies needed a cpo on 73 to see L Pulley into top spot from L Mott with Ann McCormick and G Hadfield next in with 75.

The Hibbert Cup at New Mills was won in style by Philip Urmston with a sizzling 61 taking him three shots clear of Ben Williams and Tom Longworth.

Medal action for New Mills ladies had Joyce Bennett winning a cpo on 76 from Maureen Harrison.

The Treasurer’s Millenium Bowl at Cheadle needed a cpo on 40 points to see club legend Mike Westbrook into top spot from Thomas Fenton.

Cheadle ladies played their latest Summer medal and Srah Huxley posted 74 to finish two clear of Maire Eaton and Brenda Peak.

The third round of the Wednesday Handicap Cup at Romiley was topped by Darrell Parker on 68 from John Morris 69 and Harry Parker 70.

It was close in a medal for Romiley ladies as Karen Hooley posted 74 to finish a shot clear of Janet Godfrey, Hilary Craven and Beryl Reade.

Matthew Bonner was first past the post in a medal at Gatley with his 66 taking one clear of David Woodworth and in division two Brian Browell was the main man with 68.

A singles Stableford for Gatley ladies had Angela Griffiths in charge with 34 points, three more than Jean Pratt and Marie Gordon.

Heaton Moor’s men played two rounds in pursuit of the Atkinson Tankard and the pace was set in round one by Antony Black, Neil Hodge and Dave Rodden, all 68

In round two the big guns with 67 were Stanley Wilson and Antony Black, one more than soccer legend Anthony Spellman.

The Tankard was taken by Antony Black with 135 from Dave Rodden 139 and Peter De Cunha and Alan Rothwell, both 141.

Moor’s ladies were in medal mode and it needed a cpo on 71 to take Beverley Smith into top spot from Jill Howarth and Margaret Judkins.
