THERE’S still time to apply for a share of Vernon Building Society’s £10,000 Jubilee fund for good causes in the Stockport area.

The local mortgage lender has teamed up with the Stockport Express to award funding to groups for projects that have a lasting benefit to the community.

This year’s programme will mean that since its launch in 2012 the Jubilee Fund will have awarded over £50,000 to more than 70 local charity and community groups.

James Harper from Beacon Counselling, the group who received the most votes in last year’s Jubilee Fund, said: “The process for the Jubilee Fund couldn’t be simpler; collect votes via the Stockport Express and the more you have, the more you’ll raise for your charity.

“We benefited greatly from this in 2015, with funds raised going towards employing a counsellor to support young people with mental health problems and to link them with opportunities for employment and training.”

Chief executive of the Vernon Mike Hanson said: “We’ve received a tremendous number of applications over the last four years from groups that vary greatly in both purpose and size. Even if your group is small or just starting out, please do submit an application to us.

“We’ve found that the groups who received the most funding in previous years weren’t necessarily the largest, it was all down to how they gathered support from friends, family and those involved in the cause.”

If you’re involved in a charity or community group based in Stockport or benefitting those in the area then you can apply for the Jubilee Fund at thevernon.co. uk/apply.

The closing date for applications is June 27 2016.

A panel of judges will shortlist the applications, with the 20 groups chosen entering into a public vote using tokens in the Stockport Express to determine how much funding each group will receive.

Funding will be allocated to groups according to the proportion of votes they have received of the total number of votes cast.
