Winning appearance by pupils at celebratory Olympic event

-

A GROUP of active female students picked up two awards at an event at London’s Olympic Park celebrating girls in sport.

The X-Elle Awards marked the start of the Spirit of Rio Festival in preparation for this summer’s games and were attended by Stockport Academy pupils.

Year seven student Carys McNish picked up a prize for sports leadership.

And the Girls’ Leadership and Marketing (GLAM) squad at the school, on Heathbank Road, Cheadle Heath, won the best video of the year category.

It showcased the programme of activities the girls have introduced to the school to raise awareness and interest of sport among female students.

A group of 30 from Stockport Academy also performed a Brazilian martial art ‘capoeira’ dance at the event.

They then took a session teaching their moves to the other visitors.

The event was organised by the United Learning Trust and saw youngsters from across the country learn about South American history and culture and recognise the sporting achievements of girls in years seven, eight and nine.

During the day, students heard from skier Chemmy Alcott, one of United Learning’s sport ambassadors, about her own experiences at the Olympics.

Stockport Academy principal Frank McCarron said: “We’re so proud of what these girls have done for sport in school over the last 12 months and their passion and creativity is something to be admired by all.

“To perform and pick up two awards at the Olympic Park is a once in a lifetime opportunity and their behaviour and professionalism on the day was absolutely impeccable.”

Young students also had their imagination shaken and stirred in a visit to the school by Young Bond author Steve Cole.

He was commissioned by original Bond author Ian Fleming’s estate to write the series of novels and spoke to year seven students about his love of writing, what inspires him and his passion for the spy fiction.

Children from Cheadle Heath Primary School also attended the event, which concluded with a question and answer session and then a book signing.

Mr McCarron added: “Steve was a lively, funny, really engaging guest and we were delighted to welcome him.

“His enthusiasm was quite infectious and our students loved finding out what it takes to be a successful writer.”
