Bramhall trio’s Uren Shield win

CHESTER Golf Club were excellent hosts as they staged the annual Cheshire Junior Club Team championsh­ips for the second successive year – and they were delighted to announce that they will host the event for the next three years.

The players were able to enjoy the fine course in magnificen­t condition with the event blessed by superb weather conditions.

The competitio­n usually goes right to the wire to decide the winners of the Uren Shield who will represent Cheshire in the national finals at Frilford Heath later in the year.

The early leaders were the young Wilmslow team of Katie Roberts and Joshua Horan with 74 points backed by Katie’s brother Jamie with 29 points.

But at the death a superb score of 42 points by Bramhall’s James Kempster, which was the best nett score, with support from Joe Carroll saw them draw level also with 74 points and their third player Matthew Payne made the difference topping the score posted by Jamie Roberts.

The top team with the best gross score to take the Meston Trophy were the talented defending champions Styal Golf Club led by Jacob Oakley with the best individual gross of 38 points with support from Will Dodds and Will Lucas.

The prizes were presented by Cheshire Deputy President Sean Ritchie (Chester Golf Club) who was joined by club colleagues President Jane Robinson and Deputy President John Clark for the presentati­on ceremony.

Disley’s men played for the Centenary Spring Cup and in a tight finish Bruce Mellor won a cpo on 39 points from Michael Holtom with Joe Thompson a point off the pace.

Disley ladies played a Shanghai qualifying medal and in division one L Pulley led in with 71 two less than L Mott.

In division two J Bowers posted 70 to win by three shots from G Hadfield and D Seddon.

Medal action for Cheadle’s men saw Neil Bearne top division one with 61, two less than Alan Gregory, Peter Birtwistle and Stephen Abrahams.

Cricket legend Richard Battye was the main man in division two with 63 seeing him two shots clear of Alistair Culpan and Peter Duggan.

Cheadle ladies were also in medal mode with Sarah Huxley posting an impressive 69 to finish ahead of Wendy Goodwin 70 and Irene Wright 74.

Romiley’s men played round two of the All Winners Trophy and P Wagstaff was the main man with the best gross of 72 and nett of 69 one less than Duncan Challen.

The win was enough to win Wagstaff the Trophy with a total of 141 seeing him home from Colin Granby 144 and Duncan Challen 145.

Gatley’s men played a singles Stableford and Matthew Bonner won a cpo on 36 points from David Woodworth with Grant Jones two points back.

A medal for Gatley ladies saw Angela Griffiths win a cpo on 78 from Margaret Rowland.

Heaton Moor’s men played a Stableford for the Developmen­t Trophy and Patrick Hudson-Davies led in with 39 points from Dave Rodden 38 and Richard Cole 37.

The Developmen­t Cup was played for on the same day and Carole Wheeler was top of the shop after a cpo on 39 points with Steve Netherwood.

Moor’s ladies were in medal mode for the Gibbon Bowl and Joan Clarke won a cpo on 67 with Lynn Guy, four less than Judy Collins.

A medal for New Mills men produced some good scores led in division one by Kallis Hyde with 64 from 66’s posted by D Coffey, Keane Hyde and Simon Ignotus.

Ben Williams eclipsed this in division two with 61 seeing him two shots clear of Philip Urmston.

The second round of the Warren Cup for New Mills ladies had Katherine Lindsay in charge with 35 points, two more than Alison Rudder and Jackie Piper.

It’s still neck and neck in the race for the Oldham Rabbits League top spot with just a point separating the top four teams as they go into the first round of cup matches.Reigning champions Houldworth whitewashe­d Oldham to draw level on points with Brookdale but Ashton and Dukinfield are poised ready for any slip by the top two.

Results: Dukinfield 6, Stamford 2; Brookdale 4, Ashton 4; Houldswort­h 8, Oldjam 0.

LeagueTabl­e: 15 Brookdale and Houldswort­h, 14 Ashton and Dukinfield, 7 Oldham and Stamford.

The competitio­n for the ‘Cheshire Cat’ which has a World Amateur Golf Ranking status from the R and A proved to be a great success in its inaugural launch in 2015.

It is a combined umbrella event of The Wilmslow Crow and the Stockport Salver which are both 36-hole scratch stroke play events.

The competitio­ns are played over consecutiv­e days and the player returning the lowest aggregate score for the combined 72 holes is awarded the Cheshire Cat.

The Wilmslow Crow will be played on Thursday July 14 followed by the Stockport Salver on the following day.

Cheshire Cat winner David Peel, a true legend of Cheshire Golf and a member at Stockport Golf Club, will be looking to defend his title.

Any player interested in taking part can contact either Stockport or Wilmslow Golf Clubs.

The competitio­n for the Bunty Booth Trophy is one of the top events in the busy calendar of the Manchester and District Ladies Golf Associatio­n having been played for since their Centenary in 2002.

Each of the member clubs in the MDLGA plays a singles qualifying competitio­n in the previous year to decide who will represent them in the final.

Denton Golf Club, with a course in great condition and providing a true test of golf, were the hosts for the event in which there were 68 clubs represente­d playing in a singles Stableford format.

In a close contest the winner was Sale’s 31-handicappe­r Fiona Flanagan who posted 35 points to finish ahead of Linda Bailey (Hindley Hall) 34 and Anne Ashworth (Leyland) 33.

MDLGA President Chris Kelly (Bramhall GC) presented the prizes and thanked Denton Lady Captain Norma Boott for the excellent service provided by staff and members both on and off the course.
