Rotarians give the gift of life with vital equipment

-

GENEROUS donations from the Rotary Club of Hazel Grove allowed one of its fellow clubs to buy two life-saving defibrillators.

The club has had a long relationship with the Rotary Club of Kavala and members were pleased to be able to provide the money for the items.

Robert Lewis, one of the Hazel Grove club’s members said: “We all know the problems Greece is facing at the moment with strict limits on transferring Euros out of the country and higher taxes imposed both on the population and on the goods they buy.

“It’s not been easy for the Rotary Club of Kavala in recent years, but gradually they have been able to raise money to help their local community, just as we have raised many thousands of pounds over the years for Hazel Grove and Stockport charities.”

The Rotary Club of Hazel Grove’s chosen charities this year include Beechwood and Walthew House in addition to the support it has provided to the Kavala club.

Mr Lewis added: “The defibrillators have now been delivered and have been donated to the Kavala club’s local hospital.

“They will be placed in ambulance and we understand they have already been used and hopefully, helped save a life.

“This is a really good example of how, by working together, we can make a difference, regardless of all the national and EU politics.”

The club also recently held a fundraising dinner with visiting speakers Roger Johnson and Annabel Tiffin, BBC news presenters which proved a great success and was enjoyed by all those who took part in it.

Kavala in northern Greece is the main seaport of east Macedonia and the capital of the Kavala region.

It is located across from the island of Thasos and is about 100 miles west of Thessaloniki and 23 miles north of Drama.
