Pupils slap tickets on dozy parkers
CHILDREN as young as seven are playing the role of parking warden to tackle the problem of inconsiderate drivers near their school.
Pupils at Gatley Primary, on Hawthorn Road, don high visibility jackets and hand out their own tickets with the help of PCSO Ryan Delargy.
Although there is no fine attached the scheme aims highlight the dangers of illegal parking, which is commonplace around the school at pick up and drop off times.
The pupils involved are aged between seven and 11 and began by designing posters.
Teachers were so impressed a safety campaign with regular patrols was set up.
Vanessa McManus, associate headteacher, said: “We’re incredibly proud of all of our pupils, they have shown real determination in developing this campaign.
“The drop-off points are a continuing problem and we hope this will signal a new appreciation for pupil safety.”
The pupils have become junior associates of the Gatley Village Partnership (GVP).
They have also met with Cheadle and Gatley councillor Iain Roberts to discuss a dangerous junction near the school.
He has since put through a proposal to have yellow safety signs installed.
Sean Callaghan, from Callaghans Estate Agents, who are sponsoring the campaign, said: “It is really important to listen to the children’s concerns.
“Illegal parking is an issue around the school area and we’re very happy to be involved with this initiative.”
Coun Roberts said: “The children have put a lot of effort into this campaign, we’re delighted there is community support through Callaghans, local Police and GVP.
“As always I will continue to work with the Gatley Primary on these issues.”
David Bailey, chairman of Gatley Village Partnership, added: “I am delighted to see the Young Village Partnership engaged in positive community action.
“I trust that the older generation will take note of the message that the group is sending out.”
