Moor teaming up for a great cause GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

TWO teams of four players made a great effort in raising over £5,000 for the Macmillan Nurses Charity by completing 72 holes in a day at Heaton Moor Golf Club.

The day was organised by Heaton Moor star Danny Procter who said: “This is our third year of raising money for cancer research and last year we supported The Christie and so far our total for the three years is over £15,000.

“My dad was diagnosed with prostate cancer five years ago, so each of these charities have been looking after him and more recently Macmillan who send a nurse round to see him every week.

“With the raffle and auction this year we have raised over £4,000 and with gift aid we will take it over £5,000.

“Taking part in the day were Si Loydall, Jed Ellison (head green keeper), Scott Partington (GMG), Simon Marsh (Heaton Moor profession­al), myself, Mark Roberts, Tony Black and James Lappin but leading them round in a very long day was my faithful collie Eric who gave them all great inspiratio­n and he did sleep well after we had finished!”

The fifth Captain’s qualifier at Heaton Moor was on by Alasdair Ogilvie who posted 64 to finish two shots clear of Paul Stonehouse and Andrew Gowen.

The Moor ladies Rose Bowl was won by Gillian Stockton with 71 from Lynn Guy 73 and Elaine Atkin and Kirsty Dawson, both 74.

Disley’s men played a Par competitio­n for the Spring Meeting with David Harrison winning a cpo on +3 from Guy Thompson and hot on their heels with +2 were Ian Thomason, Michael Holtom and Simon Carter.

Disley ladies played for the Norris Cup and E Critchlow strolled home with 70 from J Byatte 73 and E Johnson and L Mott, both 74.

Medal action for Cheadle’s men had division one won at a canter by Andy Howe with his 60 seeing him well clear of Andy Hall 64 and Tom Fenton, Chris Maudsley and Colin May, all 65.

Cheadle ladies were in medal mode and Wendy Goodwin took centre stage with her 67 taking her four shots clear of Sue Barker.

It was close at Romiley in the competitio­n for the Captain’s Prize for Juniors with Matt Murray winning a cpo on 66 from Brooke Snape.

Romiley’s men played for the Blades Challenge Shield with K Wykes top of the shop with 34 points from Alexander Ehegartner 33 with PD Milnes leading in five players on 32.

Romiley ladies were also in Stableford action with Diane Houghton leading in with 34 points, one more than Angela Slate.

Gatley’s men played for the Timperley Putter and the proud winner was Graeme Rawlinson with 37 points from Mark Campbell 35 and Martyn Bonner 34.

Gatley ladies played a medal for Mr Captain’s Prize and it was won by Roisin Andrew with 79 from Marie Gordon 80.

It was close in a Stableford at New Mills with a cpo on 39 points going in favour of Will Hall from Mark Brooks and Steve HolmesKirk­ham.

In a medal for New Mills ladies there was no stopping Jean Taylor who posted 70 to finish six shots clear of Judith Johnson and Rachael Unsworth.

A Junior Open at Mellor and Townscliff­e was won by home star Ben Jackson with 64, five shots clear of K McIntyre.

A Sunday Stableford for M and T ladies was won by Jean Rogerson with 35 points from Carol Butler 33 and Pat Phillips 31.

Medal action for M and T’s men had the divisions led in by Steve Roberts after a cpo on 66 with Kane Marshall and James Langshaw 65, two clear of Peter Wilkinson, J Beech and Daniel Barlow.

Reddish Vale Golf Club has a great record for developing junior talent and they are running a junior coaching clinic on Sunday July 31 in two afternoon sessions (five to eight years) and over nines.

The Balfour and Houldswort­h Committee have staged the Houldswort­h Trophy since 1897 and Bury Golf Club were excellent hosts for this year’s competitio­n that attracted 56 pairs from 20 golf clubs within a 25-mile radius of Manchester Town Hall.

Bramhall duo Ian Denby and Richard Ellis were first on the tee at 8am and posted a superb 11up score in the par competitio­n and unusually their score held on to win the day.

Next in on +8 were Chorlton father and son duo Richard and Robert Mallard who won a cpo from home pair David McDougal and Colin Stephenson and Chorlton’s Liam Harrison and John Craine.

The quality of the course was reflected in the high scoring and next year the 120th competitio­n will be held at Worsley GC.

Cheshire fielded a young and promising Boys team to take on Derbyshire Boys at Matlock Golf Club.

They fully justified their selection and showed great potential for a bright future as they posted an emphatic

In the morning foursomes there were wins for Tom and Oscar Doran (Delamere Forest), Remy Miller (Tytheringt­on) and Liam Mann (Hazel Grove) and Sam Johnson (Astbury) and Jack Muir (Styal) with Hywel Shaw (Wilmslow) and Jack McLeod (Styal) halving their match.

The team kept up their momentum in the afternoon singles with seven more wins.

They came from George Mitchell (Congleton), Sam Long (Delamere Forest), Jack Mcleod, Tom Doran, Oscar Doran, Remy Miller and Jack Muir.

Brookdale look to be favourites to lift the Oldham and District Rabbits League title as their main rivals could only draw their fixtures.

Brookdale, who lost out 8-2 to Houldswort­h in the Group B Cup table are in the thick of the race and have two vital games in hand over leaders Stamford. 10.5-3.5 victory.
