Aurora set for starring role as work begins on site
A GROUND-BREAKING ceremony was held at the site of Stockport’s newest industrial park.
The ceremony marked the start of work at Aurora Stockport, at Gorsey Bank, Cheadle Heath, and was attended by representatives from the council, builders Seddon Construction and agents CBRE.
It is hoped that the £12million development will breath life into the area by transforming a site that has sat derelict in recent years.
Work will take approximately 12 months and when complete will yield 10 industrial units ranging in size from 8,700sq ft to 47,000sq ft.
Stockport Council estimates this will create around 240 jobs.
Councillor Kate Butler, executive member for regeneration, said: “I am delighted to have been part of the ground breaking at Aurora Stockport celebrating the start of work.
“The opportunities that this development and transformation will bring are significant, not only for businesses but also for local residents, and I am excited to think about how our work will benefit so many.”
The 18-acre site overlooks the River Mersey and is designed to be energy efficient and minimise greenhouse gases.
But the name Aurora was criticised when it was first revealed, with critics saying it should be more reflective of the immediate area it is in.
Ed Wootton, from Seddon, said “Stockport is in the midst of an exciting period of growth and we are thrilled to be a part of it.
“We will be working closely with our supply chain partners to create jobs and training opportunities, building on our approach to employing apprentices.”
Steve Capper of CBRE, added: “The strength of Stockport’s industrial market has been demonstrated by the high levels of demand that we are already receiving, with terms now being discussed with several occupiers.”
