Diabetes group gets shortlisted

-

A MUM who spent the last 21 years helping young people living with diabetes and their families has been nominated for an awards.

Deborah Spires, 52, has been shortlisted for the supporting others award at Diabetes UK’s national inspire awards.

She is chair of the Stockport Tadpoles group, based at Edgeley Children’s Play Centre, on Cheadle Old Road, which helps those with the condition. It also offers support to their relatives.

The group had only just formed in 1984 when Deborah, her husband Paul and son Ashley all joined. Ashley had just been diagnosed with type one diabetes at the age of two.

Stockport Tadpoles itself is a finalist for the local group and community award.

Deborah and the group have also campaigned to raise awareness of diabetes.

She said: “I am very honoured to be put forward for the supporting others award. I am so pleased for the Stockport Tadpole Group to be finalists.

“Our group has always been supportive for children and their families. This is very important when the children have just been diagnosed, as this enables the families to meet and make new friends and share experiences.”

Stephen Ryan, from Diabetes UK, said: “The Stockport Tadpoles and Deborah have made a huge difference in Stockport.”
