Council’s backing for rail group
STOCKPORT Council has pledged its support for the Friends of Reddish South Station.
The group is campaigning for the introduction of regular services to Stockport and Manchester Victoria at the station.
At present, the station has just one ‘parliamentary’ service a week, so called because it would take an act of parliament to actually close the line.
The one-way service leaves for Stalybridge every Friday morning, and passengers must find an alternative way back.
At the latest Heatons and Reddish area committee, the group addressed councillors to ask if the new Labour-led executive would support it as it works with rail networks to achieve its aims.
Heatons north Councillor John Taylor confirmed that the authority would do ‘everything possible to expedite the reopening of the line.’
He said: “The benefits of re using this station are considerable, and not just for Stockport. It would enable people to commute to north Manchester as well as the city.”
The group’s work also includes organising one-off rail tours to pick up passengers from the station and working closely with other community groups on platform art projects.
