Stars out for John

- SHELDAN KEAY

EX-BOXER John Murray is honoured that former opponents Anthony Crolla and Kevin Mitchell will be at his retirement party next week.

Murray had a successful boxing career, winning the British and European lightweight titles, and took on Brandon Rios for the WBA lightweight title at Madison Square Garden in New York in December 2011.

Murray was then forced to retire in 2014 following a serious eye injury that almost caused him to go blind.

He has had eight operations on the eye since then to try and prevent the blindness, including an operation last week.

Murray has now become a boxing trainer after hanging up the gloves, and runs the Murray Machines Gym in Reddish, Stockport.

There will be a retirement event at the Victoria Warehouse on Friday, August 5, to celebrate his career, with a number of special guests in attendance.

Two of those guests are reigning world champion Crolla and former world title challenger Mitchell, boxers that Murray went up against in great battles during his career.

Murray is grateful that they will be there and is confident that it will be an enjoyable evening for everyone who will be in attendance.

“The likes of Crolla and Mitchell are coming down and it’s great that we can pay tribute to each other and help each other out,” he said. “We boxed together and left it all in the ring and we are like a little family. I was at Kevin Mitchell’s retirement dinner last month so it’s nice to have him at mine.”

Murray’s retirement event includes a threecourse meal, a Q&A session with Murray, special guest speakers, a comedian and live music.

Tickets are still available and can be purchased from the Victoria Warehouse website.
