POLICE are hunting two men who fled from a car that had been driving at speed through Stockport before crashing and causing ‘carnage.’

The white Audi had been seen driving through Portwood on Wednesday night and then smashed into parked cars on Carrington Road, near the New Zealand Road traffic lights.

It collided with a Fiesta that was then shunted into a trailer and a Mitsubishi, and a garden wall was also damaged.

Two men were seen escaping from the wreckage before emergency services arrived.

The owner of the Fiesta had only got out of the vehicle a minute earlier and heard the impact as he went into his house.

Police and firefighters from Whitehill, King Street and Ashton stations were called at 9.15pm to deal with the aftermath.

Stuart Hall, watch manager at Whitehill, said: “The Audi must have been motoring, the driver and the passenger had done a runner and the police were trying to trace them.

“When we got there it looked like carnage, there was shrapnel all over the road. There were no casualties though.

“The driver of the Fiesta had only got out of his car a minute before and heard a massive bang.

“He looked out of the window to see his car being moved. He was very lucky.”

Firefighters made the scene safe and Carrington Road was closed for around 30 minutes.

Police have appealed for witnesses and confirmed the Audi had been driven at speed before colliding with cars.

Officers want to speak with the two men who were seen running off from the collision, which happened near the Rifle Volunteer pub. No arrests were made.
