Our delight at funding boost from Vernon

- BY JONATHAN BILLINGS Project manager at The Wellspring

WE are delighted that The Wellspring has been chosen as one of 20 local groups to receive funding from The Vernon Building Society’s Jubilee Fund.

From August 10 to 31, tokens will be printed in The Stockport Express and the readership encouraged to vote for their favourite cause. The more tokens an organisation collects the more funding they will receive from the brilliant Jubilee Fund.

By donating your tokens to The Wellspring you will be ensuring that anyone who is sleeping rough or homeless in Stockport has a service that will support them.

Tokens can be dropped off at any Vernon branch or at The Wellspring any day of the year.

I am very concerned at the moment with the number of young people who are experiencing homelessness or at currently at risk of becoming homeless.

Fixing the issues of youth homelessness are often simple ones; mediation with parents who have experienced a relationship breakdown with their children; educating young people on the housing system or benefits system; and sometimes low level problems fixed with a simple phone call or ticking a box on an online form.

Young people are very rarely entrenched with issues. Some do have serious substance misuse problems or mental health issues and these young people are the exception to the rule. However if we could rewind to a time when these young people with serious issues first became homeless I can guarantee that their issues would have been easier ones to fix.

Why is it so crucial to focus our work on fixing these low level issues with youth homelessness? Well if we don’t they become the entrenched. Substance misuse spirals out of control at a rapid rate. Young people are the most at risk of disengaging with services. We must do all we can to prevent people from becoming entrenched, as fixing the entrenched is the hardest work of all.

Please help The Wellspring to continue to address youth homelessness and all other forms of homelessness in Stockport. Please collect Vernon Jubilee tokens for us and do your bit to ensure that people have a service open to them 365 days a year.
