Youngsters taste success in school healthy menu challenge
YOUNGSTERS were cooking up a storm as they took part in the Stockport Schoolchildren Healthy Menu Competition.
Pupils from primary schools were given the task of designing a nutritional menu, taking into consideration healthy eating choices.
The competition was run by Solutions SK and Stockport County Community Foundation.
Winner of the key stage two category was Isabelle Brookes-Mann, eight, of St Philip’s primary, in Offerton.
Her idea was chicken pasta bake with tomatoes and vegetables for main and fruit salad frozen yogurt in an biscuit cone for pudding.
An explanation submitted with the menu read: “My meal includes a healthy balance of all good groups and is great tasting. I think it would appeal to students who need energy to learn and play.
“I also support Stockport County and would love to win.”
Headteacher Miss Bomber said: “Since the opening of our new kitchen in March, the children have been given the opportunity to eat healthy, nutritious meals cooked on site by Kim, our wonderful cook.
“Our cooking club enables all children to learn how to prepare healthy meals for themselves and their families
“This led to a wonderful response to the recent competition and we were absolutely delighted that one of our children was announced a winner, and another was named a runner up.”
Fellow pupil Emily Darul was named runner up in the key stage one section.
This was won by Eve Josephine Kershaw, seven, from St Peter’s Primary, in Hazel Grove.
Her menu was baked chicken with mash, seasonal vegetables and gluten free gravy with tomato and vegetable pasta served with a wholemeal bread roll for a vegetarian option.
Jacqueline Cohen, from Solutions SK, said: “It’s been a brilliant process and we were overwhelmed with the high standard of entries.
“It was clear that the children had taken the competition seriously and put so much research, work and effort into designing their menus.”
Winners will have their menu cooked for their school, lunch with Stockport County players and a family ticket for a game at Edgeley Park.
Councillor Dean Fitzpatrick, executive Member for education, said: “Many congratulations to all the children.
“The menus of the winners and runner ups look great and the children should be really proud of their efforts.”
