Euro crown for Bramhall star Bronte

- GOLF GEOFF GARNETT

BRAMHALL Golf Club’s super star Bronte Law continued her magnificent season by winning the European Women’s Amateur Championship at Hooks Golf Club in Sweden.

A brilliant final round of 66 saw her make up a seven-shot deficit and snatch a one-shot win over overnight leader Leslie Cloots of Belgium.

Bronte, 21, birdied the final hole to become only the third English player to win the title and the first since 2000.

She is the world number three and already this season has helped GB and I win the Curtis Cup against the USA, winning all five of her matches has helped England to become European team champions.

Bronte has been named as the top woman player in US College Golf where she has enjoyed the past three years on a scholarship at the UCLA where she returns to finish her course in a few weeks and will also go to the LPGA qualifying school in October.

She had made the difficult decision not to defend her English Women’s title at West Lancs GC to rest and concentrate on her European title ambition and was rewarded with the biggest individual win of her career so far.

Bronte said: “Winning the English twice in 2014 and 2015 as a big achievement for me and I didn’t want to pull out but I really wanted to win this.”

In the final round she reached the turn in two under par then started back with a birdie and an eagle on the par four 11th hole when she holed her pitching wedge approach.

“That was probably the highlight as I was coming from a weird angle and I actually over hit it but it took one hop and went straight in,” she added.

“After that I never really looked back and I could see myself going lower and lower and I will now look to play in the Ricoh Women’s Open.”

Bronte has been a great supporter of Bramhall Golf Club and Cheshire Ladies, who she has played for many times, during all of her years in golf and her club and county are delighted with her success.
