Giles releases fringe Red Rose trio

- CHRIS OSTICK

LANCASHIRE have released Luis Reece, Gavin Griffiths and George Edwards as Ashley Giles looks to rebuild his squad for next season.

The trio have all been on the fringes of the squad this season and all three have been told their contracts will not be renewed at the end of the campaign.

Seamer Edwards has played in 11 NatWest T20 games this season for Lancashire, taking 16 wickets, and was a member of the team that won the final at Edgbaston last year.

However, the 24-yearold has been troubled with injuries since joining the Red Rose as head coach Giles’ first signing at the club in 2014 having previously been released by Surrey.

During his time at the club, Edwards has been unable to force his way into the County Championship side and now Giles has decided he has no future at Emirates Old Trafford.

Fast bowler Griffiths split the webbing between his finger and thumb while fielding and since returning to fitness, has been on loan at Hampshire, where he played four T20 matches.

Reece made an instant impression when he broke into the Lancashire Championship side in 2013, scoring 722 runs at an average of 55 in his 10 matches, including seven successive half-centuries, as the Red Rose won promotion from Division Two. However, the 25-year-old struggled in Division One the following season, averaging just 16 in nine games and had fallen out of favour after punching a dressing room wall.
