RISING stars Blossoms are fiercely proud of their Stockport roots - and the town is showing them plenty of support in return as their debut album hits the shelves.

Bandmates Tom Ogden, Charlie Salt, Josh Dewhurst, Joe Donovan and Myles Kellock launched their self-titled debut with a midnight show at The Plaza on Thursday, just a mile down the road from the Robinsons pub that gave them their name.

For a while now, road signs on the way in to the town have proudly declared it: “Stockport, home of Blossoms’.

And Stockport train station joined in on Friday morning, changing one of its departures boards to excitedly announce the record’s release with a message that read: “Stockport’s favourite sons Blossoms’ sublime new album is out today !!!!! ”

Even council leader Alex Ganotis has chipped in to congratulate them after their gig and album signing at HMV in the Merseyway shopping centre on Friday.

He said: “As somebody born and bred in Stockport it’s been fantastic to see a band like Blossoms embrace where they are from, instead of just saying they’re from Manchester like many Greater Manchester bands before them.

“I’ve seen and heard many great things about the band and it was great to finally meet them today down at Merseyway.

“They’re a great bunch of lads and as a fellow Stopfordian, I really hope that they can get the number one album that they’ve clearly worked so hard towards.”

Since 2014 they have gone from practicing in a scaffolding yard near to Edgeley Park to knocking Adele off the top of the singles chart and playing to sold-out crowds including a slot at Glastonbury this summer.

Frontman and lead singer Tom Ogden, 22, said: “We obviously want to be as successful as we can be, that’s always been our aim, including getting a number one album along with making great music, but we also want to help our hometown of Stockport, whether that’s by spiking interest in the town or by helping our local football team Stockport County.

“We definitely want to do our bit to help.”
