STOCKPORT’S historic Market Place will be transformed by a spectacle of cutting-edge Edinburgh Fringe street theatre on the Sunday afternoon of the Stockport Old Town Fringe Festival.

The three day extravaganza of music, art and dance, which takes place over the August Bank Holiday weekend and involves many of the venues in Stockport Old Town, is sponsored by the town’s biggest commercial landlord Orbit Developments with support from Robinsons Brewery and Stockport Council, and the Stockport Express and Pure 107.8 as media partners.

Back by popular demand for the third year running is The Dick Danger Show, which has thrilled thousands of visitors making children and adults alike gasp open-mouthed with amazement.

Dick defies gravity as he scales a 30ft high pole in a suit, disrobes into a bathing costume and hangs his clothes on a washing line high above the crowd. He then performs death-defying acrobatic feats on top of the pole before diving down headfirst into a bucket. Dick Danger is a must-see show for all ages which will take place at 2pm and 4.15pm on Sunday, August 28.

There’s more thrills and spills from Bampot – a playful acrobatic show featuring Morag McBru who is full of Scottish spirit.

Combining circus and comedy Morag demonstrates five different uses for a can of Irn Bru and ends with a kilt-wearing, rope-walking, knife-juggling finale. The Bampot show will run twice on the Sunday at 1pm and 3pm.

Sunday’s activities also include dancing from The Urban Gypsies and free circus skills workshops from The Circus House. The Stockport Ukulele Players will be running a free workshop at 1pm in Angel Yard behind Seven Miles Out for anyone who wants to learn to play the ukulele.

Participants can then join the Stockport Ukulele Players for a special performance as part of the Fringe Festival in the Market Place.

The Bakers Vaults will be hosting their Jazz and Blues Stage in Castle Yard and Seven Miles Out will have a full programme of live music with Dr Butler’s Afternoon Surgery from 1pm with Dr Butler’s Hatstand Medicine Band and special guests.

And don’t miss The Dance of the Gigantes as the silver stag, copper unicorn, golden dragon and multicoloured cows escape for some playful entertainment in the Market Square.

Stockport Old Town Fringe Festival runs from Friday to Sunday August 26 to 28.
