Dry night forecast at music event to show Recovery Rocks

-

A CHARITY has organised a day of music aiming to show drink or drugs are not needed to have a good time.

Recovery in Stockport (RiS) is inviting people to Recovery Rock, which takes place at Stockport Guildhall, Wellington Road South, on Sunday, August 14.

It has two parts - the first being a Battle of the Bands for people aged 11 to 25 from 2pm to 5pm.

Then there is a line up of bands from 7pm to 9pm (doors open 6pm). The groups performing are The Templars, The Ragamuffins and Rebound.

At the event there will be no alcohol served or allowed and a zero tolerance on drugs.

Gary Howse, secretary of RiS and event organiser, said: “There have been dry nights in Manchester and the feedback we have heard about them is very good.

“People say they can appreciate the music better as they are not numbed by alcohol or drugs. So there is a serious message behind the event, that you can have a good night without these things.

“For far too long pubs and clubs have gone hand in hand with alcohol and sometimes drugs. We want to give people an alternative.

“If we give people a chance to experience a dry night out, they then have the choice whether or not they go forward with it.”

The Battle of the Bands will be judged by a panel with the winners receiving a trophy.

RIS, which opened in December, supports people recovering from drug and alcohol addiction by being a ‘bridge from treatment to the real world.’

It is based at the Wellspring, and has three access sessions a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

They are informal drop-ins and can be anything from a chat to advice and signposting on other services.

And on Saturdays the group organises activities such as trips to the cinema, orienteering and quizzes.

Members of the band Rebound, who are a collective of eight musicians from Bolton, have themselves been through the recovery process.

The charity’s last major event, the Stockport Sleep Out, raised £2,000 for the Wellspring. Tickets for Recovery Rocks are £5 for the day event £7.50 for the evening or both.
