Disciplined approach reaped dividends

- SHELDAN KEAY

JAMES Gannon feels Stockport’s physical match against Alfreton Town was a good way to prepare his side for the demands of the season.

A number of hard tackles went in during the match at Edgeley Park, and Gannon believes it will be much more of the same throughout the rest of the National League North campaign.

“It’s a physical league and we can see that we have strong sides, Alfreton are one of them,” he said.

“Our plan is to keep the ball moving quickly and step past people to take the energy away from

them, and then they may resort to fouling. That mentality was the difference against Alfreton. Instead of being in control of the game they gave away silly fouls, but I’m big on discipline and control. It doesn’t matter whether it’s Motherwell, Dundalk or Stockport, mental control has an effect on winning a match. Every game will be demanding and Alfreton are a good side.

“I think they will be there or there abouts in the top 10 this season.”

While Gannon was happy that his team’s season began with a victory, he admits there are still areas that his side needs to work on.

“Our point of view is that three points is great, but there are a lot of lessons to be learned from the game,” he said.

“We learned about the level and ourselves and it was nice to get a win but we know that there is room for improvement as well.”
