Children celebrate cash boost to replace park play equipment
CHILDREN in Edgeley are getting excited after it was revealed their local playground is set for a transformation.
Alexandra Park, on Edgeley Road, has been allocated £80,000 council money for the replacement and upgrading of play equipment.
Pupils at nearby Alexandra Park Primary were told of the news before the end of term and gave it the thumbs up.
Councillor Sheila Bailey, from the Edgeley and Cheadle Heath ward, said: “In a recent review of play areas Alexandra Park came out top of the list as being in need of replacement and upgrading of the play equipment.
“Children said they and their friends used the play area a lot and were very excited about the improvements that will be made.
“Good quality, safe play areas contribute hugely to the health and wellbeing of children. The work will be done as soon as possible.”
The cash is part of £615,000 for green spaces announced and which coincided with Love Parks Week.
A further £93,000 will go towards surfacing works.
Coun Bailey added: “Love Parks Week is a great way to celebrate our parks and greenspaces, which are highly valued by our local communities.
“This extra funding will allow us to improve the current facilities and make them better and safer for our children, residents and visitors.”
Alexandra Park is also having equipment for a £100,000 skatepark installed.
It follows a three year campaign by youngsters in the area who successfully argued there should be more facilities.
The skatepark is being sited in what was the tennis court area of the park.
Despite a few objections from nearby residents over potential anti-social behaviour it is thought the facility will decrease such nuisance by making the park busier.
