Street art mural a step on the road to centre refurb
A SPLASH of creative colour has been added to Brinnington thanks to a project between children and artists.
Youngsters decorated the outside of Brinnington Youth Centre, on Hereford Road, with street art murals.
They teamed up with artists Russ Meehan and Karen Allerton to create designs that reflected the local natural environment and industrial heritage.
To gain inspiration the group had field trips visiting Reddish Vale Country Park, the Northern Quarter in Manchester and the Manchester Art Gallery.
And after deciding what to paint the murals were finished by the end of the summer holidays.
Councillor Colin Foster, executive member for children, was at the unveiling, which was part of a refurbishment of the centre.
He said: “It was great to celebrate with this group of young people.
“This project has also enabled youngsters to show skills they have got and has contributed towards the community in having a building which is interesting.”
Russ added: “It’s great that this group has been involved in a positive, proactive and creative project, instead of struggling to find something to do during the summer holidays.
“I think they have learned a lot from this project, including responsibility, because it has been hard work - it’s not easy to do a project like this.
“I hope that they are really pleased with what they have produced and feel a sense of ownership.”
Meanwhile other Brinnington youngsters have been more interested in sport.
Pupils at Westmorland Primary have have taken part in a programme to support Brazilian Paralympic athletes Andre Brasil, Yohansson Ferreira, Phelipe Rodrigues, Bruno Landgraf, Danielle Rauen and Edênia Garcia.
Children have skyped the athletes and asked them questions about their sport and training.
