Town see off Alsager in Vase tie

- FA VASE TROPHY FIRST ROUND ALSAGER TOWN ......... 0 STOCKPORT TOWN .... 3

ANDREW CROMPTON STOCKPORT Town progressed through to the First Round of the FA Vase Trophy following a comfortable 3-0 win away at Alsager Town.

Goals from George Blackwell and a brace from Jake Pollard saw the Lions create their own history after winning and progressing in their first ever FA Vase match.

Calum Sykes’ players will have known that they had a chance going into the all Hallmark Security League clash, having won at the Wood Park Stadium last season by the same result in the League Challenge Cup.

The game got off to a good start for the visitors as Ruben Abreu worked the Alsager keeper, Chris Fletcher, twice in the opening 15 minutes.

The Lions went in front following a good passing move that saw Nathan Neequaye play in Pollard who duly slotted the ball past Fletcher into the far corner.

Lee O’Brien’s 25-yard strike was then tipped over the bar by Fletcher before Josh Glover had an equaliser disallowed for the home side on the stroke of half-time.

Alsager came out in the second half looking the stronger team in the opening minutes, Paul Taylor came close had it not been for a fantastic save from Stockport’s Daniel Whiting.

The away side then doubled their lead on 62 minutes following patient build-up play. Blackwell received the ball before beating two Alsager players and burying his shot into the bottom corner past Fletcher.

Just three minutes later and Stockport had secured their progression as Pollard grab his second of the game.

The winger drove forward with the ball for 30 yards before smashing his shot past Fletcher to see his side into the next round.

Mark Grice headed wide for Alsager late on but it was a day for Stockport Town to remember as they saw out the final whistle.

The Lions will play at home in the First Round against Ryhope Colliery Welfare on Saturday 22nd October, but for now they turn their attention back to the league as they welcome Litherland Remyca to Stockport Sports Village on Tuesday evening.
