Pub all set to be rising star

I HAVE to confess I’d never been in the Rising Sun.

Sure I’d been past it many times but never found the time to call in. I don’t think I missed too much in the past couple of years when about four different licensees each tried to stamp their own particular mark on the place, generally without success.

Before that it has been in the same family for many years and was a proper community pub. Stuart Glover plans to get it back to the glory days.

Stuart re-opened the pub in mid-September and he comes with a wealth of experience running pubs and bars in Manchester City Centre and Didsbury. He realises the Rising Sun is a rather different proposition but after viewing it after an Enterprise Inns open day he realised the potential was there. ‘I want to give it back to the local people’ he tells me. So far it’s looking good as some of the old regulars return. So what can they expect?

The pubs itself combines a rambling old-fashioned interior with a quite modern traditional vibe which I think works well. There are various rooms, some with large screen televisions and a variety of seating from tall chairs to low settees, and round the side a public bar area complete with dartboard.

Out at the back a secluded smoking area leads to a well laid-out beer garden. Stuart wants the main selling point to be the food which is now available every day from noon until 9pm. It’s all homemade and freshly prepared and when I called was clearly attracting local diners.

Interestingly though, none of the tables are set out for dining as Stuart is keen for people to come and have a drink without feeling the need to eat as well. Food ranges from starters such as nachos, loaded skins and soup while mains cover the spectrum from pies, steaks, surf’n’turf to a separate burger menu. I tried one of the burgers and not only was it superbly presented it tasted great too, as did the accompanying chips and salad. Let’s not forget the beer. While there are four handpumps on the bar only two are currently in use. Stuart, who is passionate about beer quality, explains that he aims for quality over quantity and this can only come by turning over the beer. This is a very sensible approach which is to be applauded. The two beers are changing guests and when I called these were Robinsons Trooper and Mad Good from the Purity Brewing down in Warwickshire.

As the pub gets into its stride there’s more going on. Every Thursday there’s a quiz night while a family day is planned for Halloween. Some live acoustic music is in the pipeline as well.

I think what Stuart is doing here really does deserve support as I for one would like to see the Rising Sun thrive again. The 330 bus will drop you outside and the pub is right next to Bredbury Station so drop by soon and say hello. »●Opening hours: 12 noon – 11pm Sunday – Thursday; 12 noon – midnight Friday and Saturday
