Young linguists find themselves to be among best in the world

A CHEADLE school boy is among the top 10 linguists in the world.

Shaurya Kashyap showed off his language skills at this year’s Internatio­nal Vocab Express championsh­ips.

Along with his classmates from the Manchester Grammar School the boys helped their school come second in the Genius Cup and fourth in the Challenge Cup - gaining the highest number of points in the school’s history.

Shaurya, 14, was MGS’s Vocab Express champion, as he came out on top in Spanish and finished eighth overall for his points tally.

Haseeb Aman Saleemi, also 14, from Cheadle, was top in the world for Portuguese.

Spanish teacher Elizabeth Garnett said: “I am so proud of all the boys for their efforts. They performed superbly throughout the well.

“We have so many talented linguists here at MGS who brought us some great individual and team victories.

“To finish both second in the Genius Cup and fourth in the Challenge Cup, making us the top performing school in the north west was fantastic.

“For Shaurya to finish among the top 10 linguists in the world was a truly remarkable achievemen­t.

“This year our overall scores were records for the school, setting the bar even higher for next year.

“I am immensely proud of the dedication of the boys to stretch their vocabulary skills. Just as importantl­y, our boys will take these skills and their knowledge and use them to their advantage in years to come.”

Adi Adora, 14, from Altrincham came ninth in the world overall and took the top spot for Spanish.

Ali Siddiqui, from Longsight won the Urdu competitio­n and Aaryaman Roy, of Blackley, won the cup for Russian.
