Universal Credit opened up new work for Kirsty
THE FLEXIBLE SERVICE HELPS GET PEOPLE BACK TO WORK QUICKLY
UNIVERSAL Credit rolls six existing benefits and tax credits with a single monthly payment, supporting people who on a low income or out of work.
FLEXIBLE
Universal Credit is flexible, making it easier to take part-time and short-term jobs as a stepping stone into work without worrying about losing out.
It tops up your earnings to make sure you’re better off in work, and claims don’t close just because you work over a certain number of hours.
GRADUATE STRUGGLES
After completing her degree in Psychology at Liverpool University, Kirsty found it difficult to find a job. After a number of weeks struggling to find employment, she made a claim to Universal Credit. Her work coach discussed some of the reasons she may be struggling to find work. It seemed Kirsty’s lack of work experience was one of the main issues.
WORK PLACEMENT
Kirsty was delighted when her work coach offered her the opportunity to take a placement to develop her office skills. While on the placement, Kirsty was recommended to a local employer who needed temporary holiday cover for 4 weeks. Kirsty was able to take this paid temporary work as she didn’t have to worry about re-opening her Universal Credit claim when her job ended and as her circumstances changed.
Kirsty’s enthusiasm and professionalism impressed her employers during her 4 weeks at Mole Group and she was offered a full time position with the company. She was even nominated fora Rising Star award via Chamber of Commerce.
Her employers were particularly keen to keep someone on who is consistently positive and in their words, “Kirsty is a ray of sunshine. She made an impact with her ‘can do’ attitude, which we value above experience, and we knew we wanted her to stay!”
