The Stockport Libraries and Information-run awards ceremony was held at edgeley Park and hosted by ‘That Poetry Bloke’ poet, writer and performer Craig Bradley.

The awards were voted for by children between the ages of three and 16 from across the borough.

The winner of the best picture book award was Never Tickle a Tiger, created by Pamela Butchart and Mark Boutavant and published by Bloomsbury Press.

Jessica’s Ghost by Andrew Norriss and published by David Fickling Books was named best teen read.

Pamela Butchart, Martyn Ford and Andrew Norriss were all present to receive their award and were presented with a piece of original artwork created in local schools.

The event was also attended by the mayor, Councillor Chris Gordon and mayoress Dr Margaret Gordon who presented trophies for the reader of the year award and most improved reader of the year.

This summer the ‘Big Friendly Read’, with a Road Dahl theme challenged the children to read six books over the holidays and come and tell library staff about their experience.

A total of 16 children won tickets to this awards ceremony by completing the challenge.

Councillor David Sedgwick welcomed everyone on the night, as well as presenting St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Marple Bridge with the inter school trophy for having the highest percentage of children completing the Summer Reading Challenge across the borough.

He said: “It was wonderful to see all these amazing awards being handed out.

“Reading is crucial part in growing up and is great to see that all the children have got involved.”

Stockport Children’s Book Awards, which are now in their 21st year, are highly regarded by the publishing industry as the winners are selected exclusively by children.
